The Mennonites surged from a schism with the Protestant Reform of the XVI century spreading from the original Switzerland to all over the world, always migrating in order to keep their austere way of living. Refusing technology in different grades they arrived in Bolivia in the fifties looking for cheap land and religious freedom. Then colonized the surrounding area of Santa Cruz de la Sierra, an oil-rich, fertile region known as the Bolivian Chaco.
