A late nesting triggered by extreme cold weather and severe droughts in their habitats could be the cause why dozens of these graceful baby birds started to appear in cities that surround the salt flats of Uyuni. Unable to fly and being migratory animals they may have been left behind by their relatives on their routes escaping from the winter in the salty lagoons they live and reproduce. Hungry, disoriented and often too weak to fly or fend for themselves and find food on a new and hostile environment they are dying frozen, being smashed by touristic ATVs or trucks carrying mined salt across the flats or just being carried away by people that feel sorry and try to protect them from the cold in their houses.
